Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #10 – Winners & map of all Volcamon locations

It took a small army of Volcamon volcanoheads to catch up to the Penguin Overlord (also known as Jesper), but at last we virtually meet at 3.27 kilometers above sea level. For almost a year Li’l Volcanohead and Penguin Overlord have been arguing over Etna and who loves the volcano more..but now we have declared a…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #9

At 2,880 meters, a volcanohead needs to rest..not because of altitude sickness nor tired short little legs.  This seemed like a good discreet spot to emplace some aa….and when you gotta go, you gotta flow.  By the way, you might want to watch where you step. Nobody captured Volcamon #8, so three more points for me.…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #8

Being an anthropomorphic volcano has its troubles.  It seems a volcanohead has to be accompanied to get into the summit, and “I’m with Southeast Crater” isn’t a valid argument. Maybe next time, a volcanohead should try wearing bright white sneakers, a floppy hat, camera and fanny-pack and try to pass off as a slightly volcanomorphic…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #7

At just above 2600 meters, somebody has memorialized their true love.  A volcanohead has brought a valentine for Vulcanessa, but in vain. This sentimental sign in scoria can be seen from satellite. #6 was never captured, and it would seem this small syndicate of sentient cinder cones is untouchable. Perhaps they should have the rewards for…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #6

At 2,565 meters, the tourists appear to have become a bit more accustomed to seeing cones and craters all around. For a volcanohead, this is Disneyland and Woodstook all wrapped up in one happy package. #5 has escaped and returned to the top secret  hidden Volcamon lair.   Is it possible that all these volcanoheads are…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #5

Never let it be said that Kazanatama is lazy.  A volcanohead prefers to think of it as “being resourceful”…just as a volcanohead prefers to think of hot-wiring a tour bus as “creative ride-sharing”.   At 2500 meters up,  a volcanohead is also feeling a bit high..but only in a good way. #4 has escaped as…

Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge #78 – Volcamon Etna – #4

Volcamon #3 has also avoided capture, but #4 is throwing caution to the wind. It isn’t every day a volcanohead gets to experience Etna as a tourist.  As a matter of fact, it is very difficult for Kazanatama to secure a ticket for a summit ascent in spite of being one of the most anthropomorphized volcanoes…

Welcome

"Eldfjallanördást" may or may not even be a proper Icelandic word. "Eldfjall" translates to "Fire Mountain, and "nördást" is literally "nerd-love" and if eldfjallafræði is volcanology, then this blog is volcanogeekery.

I am not a volcanologist..or geologist... or even a college graduate. I am just a person who has always been interested in volcanoes. But since finding a group of like-minded enthusiasts following the Bardarbunga eruption online, my flicker of interest has kind of exploded into a full-blown pursuit. Being that I am a self-identifying nerd, I feel it is my duty to inspire others to become as passionate about volcanoes as I am...or else annoy them into submission. :)

I invented the Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge after downloading Google Earth. I was zooming around the globe and decided to drop in on Mount Vesuvius..but was a little surprised to find myself virtually inside the crater. I had not reckoned on Google Earth's maps being quite so detailed. After posting a screen-grab to my Facebook wall and seeing who could guess where I was, I decided to make it a weekly event...and the best part of all is that each week I challenge myself to learn interesting facts about another volcano.

In addition to the Virtual Volcano Vacation challenge, I will occasionally post time-lapse videos made by others or myself, and repost other more obscure or whimsical content that probably gets overlooked by the more scholarly volcano blogs.
