Volcanoes are funny people.  You can learn a lot about one just by looking at its various vents and calderas and flows IF you know what you are looking for, but then they also have their funny little quirks.  This old girl is no exception.

This is her freshest face. From the blush of red on these pyroclastic cones, I would guess the rocks of this area are more basaltic. Also, this location was erupting when I was still a baby (around fortysomething years ago).  Since then, she has been quiet as a mouse.

So I tiptoed downslope, not wanting to wake her, and grabbed this photo of some of her newest rock from her last somewhat explosive eruption.
